Important Health Insurance Industry Terminology

Below are some of the most widely used health insurance industry terms.  

The following insurance terms are those most used in the industry and identify a specific item.  They may not be as well known to the general public, but are more common to industry specialists.

Navigation

Capitation An article on the explanation and uses of Capitation in health plans.  A phenomenon in the 1990s.
COBRA A method of extending group insurance coverage for employees who meet eligibility requirements. 
Appeals If a phone call won't work to overturn a denial, an appropriately worded appeal letter must be submitted to the health plan.
Major Risk Plans An option for health insurance coverage for certain individuals who are considered high risk.
Medicare Supplemental Insurance Medicare does not pay 100% of the bill.  The difference, known as Medi-Gap, is explained here.
HIPAA A description summary of a law to protect patient confidentiality.
